Ways to Get Involved

Year 6 - 7
Transition
Program

The years between primary and secondary school (years 6 - 7) are a critical time of change in a child's life and can be tricky for some students.

The move from primary to secondary school is a critical time of change in a child’s life. Teachers and parents play a vital role in helping students make a successful transition, setting them up to thrive academically, socially and emotionally.

The transition to high school is full of uncertainty. The thought of a completely new school … filled with new kids … and a whole set of new teachers can be daunting. There’s different rules, different work, different clothes, and different customs … it’s a strange new land to navigate.

It doesn’t matter if you’re 11 years old or 111 years old, change can be scary. Fortunately, the solution is simple. Just like flicking on a light can help someone overcome a momentary fear of the dark, students tend to better manage their fear of the future when they learn a bit more about what might lie in store.

Especially designed for parents and teachers of year 6 and 7 students, Life Ed’s “Guide to Thrive” shines a light on:

  • How to ease student academic and social fears
  • Ways to manage changing school workloads
  • Learning the logistics of navigating to, from and around school
  • Creating productive communication between parents, teachers and schools
  • And tailoring support for students with special needs

Teachers will be able to download and implement the resources into their program. The resources will be available from our website from July so complete the online form to register your interest and download the parent or teacher checklist today.

FAQs
Designed for teachers and families of year 6 and 7 students, Life Ed’s evidence-based Guide to Thrive program is a change tool kit that will arm students with the survival skills, expert knowledge and creative inspiration to help them thrive in secondary school and beyond.
The Guide to Thrive includes three sections. These are:

1. Teacher professional development modules (mapped to AITSL teaching standards).
2. Practical classroom activities for Teachers (transforming research into practice). This embeds learning from the professional development into practice.
3. Complementary resources for parents and carers. Supporting parents and carers to talk to their young people and how to gather necessary information.
Our evidence-based program shines a light on important topics including:

✔ How to ease student academic and social fears
✔ Ways to manage changing school workloads
✔ Learning the logistics of navigating to, from and around school
✔ Creating productive communication between parents, teachers and schools
✔ How to make new friends
✔ And tailoring support for students with special needs
The free teacher and parent/carer resources will support students to ensure their transition from primary to secondary school is successful, healthy, socially and behaviourally positive. The resources will also focus on assisting students to increase their own capacity to manage change.
The free teacher and parent resources will be available on the Life Ed website from August 2022. Teachers will be able to download and integrate the resources into their program of learning.
