Thursday, 26 Sep 2024

The Kalkarindji Freedom Fest, held annually to commemorate the historic 1966 Wave Hill Walk-off and the birth of Aboriginal Land Rights, brought the community together from 23-25 August 2024 for a celebration rich with culture, music, arts, sports, and more. Among the festival’s highlights was the significant involvement of Life Ed NT, whose staff played a pivotal role in community engagement, promoting health education, and reinforcing their presence in Kalkarindji through a series of well-received events.

During the festival, Life Ed NT staff actively participated in the School Sports Carnival, the Community Disco, and the Community Family Day, each offering unique opportunities to connect with the community and promote a healthy, smoke-free lifestyle. The festival started with the School Sports Carnival, where Life Ed NT staff engaged with students and community members through two exciting activity rotations. The Tackling Indigenous Smoking (TIS) education sessions provided vital information on the importance of a smoke-free lifestyle. At the same time, a Ninja Warrior-style obstacle course encouraged physical activity and highlighted lung health benefits. The team’s involvement continued into the second day, where they supported the carnival’s operations and engaged in community touchpoints, further strengthening their bond with the Kalkarindji community.

The Community Disco, organised by the Gurindji Children’s and Community Centre, saw Life Ed NT staff and Big Harold, the beloved mascot, add a special touch to the evening. Their presence elevated the atmosphere and created an enjoyable experience for children and families, ensuring the night was filled with fun and laughter. The disco was a resounding success, with Life Ed NT’s involvement making it a memorable event for all.

The festival’s final day featured the Community Family Day, where Life Ed NT set up a “Chill Out and Health Wellbeing Stall” alongside the TIS team’s “Smoke-Free Activities.” This stall became a hub of activity, offering families a space to relax, learn about healthy living, and participate in smoke-free activities. The initiative reinforced the importance of a smoke-free lifestyle, all within a supportive and enjoyable environment.

Life Ed NT’s participation in the Kalkarindji Freedom Fest achieved remarkable outcomes, including enhanced community engagement, increased visibility, and the successful promotion of health education. Their active involvement in these key events showcased Life Ed NT’s commitment to the Kalkarindji community, leaving a positive and lasting impact on all who attended. As the festival concluded, it was clear that Life Ed NT had not only contributed to the celebration of Aboriginal Land Rights but had also played a crucial role in promoting health and wellbeing in Kalkarindji, reinforcing their relationship with the community for years to come.
