Governor-General of Australia joins Life Ed in the NT
The Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, Her Excellency the Honourable Ms Sam Mostyn AC recently joined Healthy Harold and the Life Ed team during their visit to Parap Preschool and Primary School in the Northern Territory (NT).
As Patron of Life Ed in Australia, Her Excellency was in her element, engaging with students and helping to deliver the day’s learning activities. Her Excellency participated in two separate sessions, led by the highly-skilled Educators of Life Ed NT, who are preparing to celebrate 40 years of impact and partnership with the NT community.
The Governor-General was welcomed by the CEO of Life Ed Australia, Karen Robertson, CEO of Life Ed NT, Martha Baker, Parap Primary School Principal, Bianca Hyke, School Captains, Ellie M, Blake C, Arlo T and Liidi R, and the iconic Healthy Harold.
Together, the group enjoyed talking and singing about healthy habits as part of the Harold’s Healthy Day module in the newly open, purpose-built Parap Preschool and the Friends and Feelings module with a group of curious Year 3 students at Parap Primary School.
Her Excellency was happy to dive into the active learning sessions, helping Educators to demonstrate how to brush teeth at least twice a day, discussing how people can monitor their bodies’ warning signals and sharing strategies to stay calm and safe. The Governor-General was then presented with an overview of the Life Ed NT-led project to co-design culturally-safe First Nations resources with local Elders and communities that enhance engagement and understanding in Life Ed programs across the NT.
Most importantly, cultural elements are always prioritised and celebrated in the development and delivery of our program. It is powerful to see how the Life Ed NT team, carefully craft and adapt our evidence-based resources into culturally-appropriate and safe materials, co-designed by the communities they work in. We’re thrilled to be able to showcase this to our Patron, the Governor-General, a strong advocate for First Nations communities, reconciliation and equity in education.
Life Ed is grateful to have the support of such an eloquent and compassionate leader. These traits rang true in her interactions with Preschool and Primary School students and staff.
