Take A Breath

Smoking and vaping - your voice, your choice

Students investigate the issues around vaping and smoking. Students are encouraged to stop and "take a breath", ask questions, seek answers, and exercise critical thinking skills before making a decision.

Did you know that the nicotine contained in one typical disposable vape can be equal to the same amount found 50 cigarettes?

“Take a Breath” explores the issues around vaping and smoking, through the lens of real Australian students.

“Take a Breath” features children in Years 5 and 6 who have genuine questions about vaping, alongside real high school students who recorded and edited their responses.

The young people in the module investigate the issue by:

  • Analysing and drawing comparisons between the history of smoking and the growth of vaping in recent years;
  • Identifying that nicotine is an addictive drug that can impact health and wellbeing; and
  • Discussing the social influences surrounding the choice to vape or not to vape.

What is it about?

Students will...
  • Understand the impacts of smoking and vaping on individuals and communities
  • Understand the social norms around smoking and vaping in the community
  • Apply critical thinking skills in relation to smoking and vaping
  • Apply strategies that promote their safety and the safety of others
