'Take a Breath' features children in Years 5 and 6 who have genuine questions about vaping, alongside real high school students who recorded and edited their responses.
Overview
Students investigate the issues around vaping and smoking. Students are encouraged to stop and "take a breath", ask questions, seek answers, and exercise critical thinking skills before making a decision.

Take a Breath – Tuning-In Lesson – What Is a Drug?
Students will understand what a drug is and the different types of drugs including legal and illegal drugs. Students will begin to explore information about laws that regulate smoking and vaping in preparation for the face-to-face Life Ed visit. Activities include • voting • whole class discussion• small group work • evidence of learning activity • reporting back • at home follow up.

Take a Breath – Tuning-In Lesson – How Do Drugs Get in the Body?
Students will learn about the addictive drug Nicotine and the impacts it can have on the body and brain. Students will explore different ways drugs get into the body in preparation for the face-to-face Life Ed visit. Activities include • whole class discussion• small group work • evidence of learning activity • reporting back • at home follow up.

This is the core part of the program. If you have booked a visit with Life Ed, this will be delivered in the Mobile Learning Centre or in your classroom by a specialist Life Ed Educator.

Take a Breath – Post-Visit Lesson – A Smoky History
Students will better understand the history of smoking and tobacco use and how tobacco arrived in Australia. The lesson provides updates on the laws introduced throughout the decades to help people quit smoking. This mini lesson also explores how First Nations people used smoke as part of traditional practices and how this is very different to cigarette smoking. This lesson extends learning after the face-to-face Life Ed visit. Activities include • voting • whole class discussion • video • small group work • drag & drop categorising • evidence of learning activity • reporting back • at home follow up.

Take a Breath – Post-Visit Lesson – Smoking and Health
Students will better understand how smoking cigarettes can harm the body. Students will have opportunities to share prior knowledge, opinions and suggest reasons why young people should remain smoke free in the future. This lesson extends learning after the face-to-face Life Ed visit. Activities include • voting • whole class discussion • video • small group work • drag & drop categorising • evidence of learning activity • reporting back • at home follow up.

Students will explore how using e-cigarettes and vapes can harm the body and brain. Students will have opportunities to share prior knowledge, opinions and suggest reasons why young people should remain aerosol and vape free in the future. This lesson extends learning after the face-to-face Life Ed visit. Activities include • voting • whole class discussion • video • small group work • drag & drop categorising • evidence of learning activity • reporting back • at home follow up.

Students will explore that smoking and vaping doesn’t just impact the body and brain, but it can impact people financially, socially, and harm the environment. This lesson extends learning after the face-to-face Life Ed visit. Take a Breath – Post-Visit Lesson – Critical Thinking and Reliable Sources
Students will learn that there is a lot of information out there about smoking and vaping. Some of it can be useful while others can be distracting or misleading. In this mini lesson students will learn how to find reliable sources of information and how to apply it to real life situations. This lesson extends learning after the face-to-face Life Ed visit. Activities include • whole class discussion • small group work • drag & drop categorising • evidence of learning activity • reporting back • at home follow up.

Take a Breath – Post-Visit Lesson – Smoking and Vaping: Changes
Students will investigate the changes that have occurred since tobacco and cigarettes were first introduced. Students will learn how laws have come into place to ban advertising, limit sales, and inform the places that people can smoke or vape. This mini lesson demonstrates how trends come and go, and social norms change over time. This lesson extends learning after the face-to-face Life Ed visit. Step 4: Booster Sessions
The Booster sessions videos and discussion guides are the last part in the 4-Step program. A discussion guide with questions and suggested answers is attached with each booster session video below. To meet all of the outcomes for this module, teachers are encouraged to use the discussion guides to extend student learning and observe student understanding of the content covered.
Take A Breath – Session 1 – Smoking To Vaping – Then To Now
This booster video lesson takes students through the history of smoking in Australia, changes to advertising, laws and the decreasing rates of smoking . Students are encouraged to make a link between smoking and the changing social norms around vaping.

In this video lesson, the infomraion students have learned about nictotine in the Take a Breath module are reinforced and students are encouraged to consider the broader spectrum of costs and impacts of vaping.

Take A Breath – Session 3 – Finding Answers: Your Voice, Your Choice
In the final video lesson, students are encouraged to consider how they can support others and be a positie influence on their decisions around vaping. They are reminded that most young people choose not to vape or smoke and challenged to think of their dreams for the future and how making healthy and safe choices will help them achieve their dreams.
